Stomach Cancer Symptoms: Early Warning Signs to Know
Medically reviewed by Dr. E. Vimalakar Reddy, Surgical Gastroenterologist, Apollo Hospitals, Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad | Last reviewed: 24 June 2026
Quick answer: Stomach (gastric) cancer often begins quietly, mimicking everyday indigestion. Watch for persistent heartburn or acidity, feeling full after small meals, nausea, loss of appetite, upper-abdominal discomfort and unexplained weight loss. Symptoms that last more than 2–3 weeks — especially with weight loss or difficulty swallowing — need an endoscopy.
Symptoms to watch for
- Persistent indigestion, acidity or burning that doesn't settle.
- Feeling full quickly after eating small amounts.
- Loss of appetite and unexplained weight loss.
- Nausea or recurrent vomiting.
- Difficulty swallowing.
- Black stools or vomiting blood (a warning sign needing urgent care).
- Tiredness from anaemia.
Risk factors
- Chronic H. pylori infection and long-standing acid reflux.
- Tobacco use and heavy alcohol consumption.
- A diet high in salted, smoked or processed foods and low in fresh fruit/vegetables.
- Family history of stomach cancer; age above 50.
